Why we're opening this up
If you're reading this, you might be an experienced barista who wants to work for yourself, someone leaving a career you've outgrown, or simply a person who loves coffee and has been quietly wondering whether you could make a living from it.
A tuk tuk asks far less of you than a café. No lease, no fit-out, no dining room to fill on a wet Tuesday. It goes where the people already are, and it can move when they move.
What it does need is exceptional coffee and someone who genuinely cares about serving it. We handle the first part. You bring the second.
We roast every bean ourselves in small batches in Hampshire, we source direct, and we're the southern UK distributor for Slayer Espresso. So the machine on your tuk tuk and the coffee going through it come from the same people. That's rarer than it sounds.
The opportunity
Why a coffee tuk tuk franchise, and why OHCO?
Small footprint, low overhead
No lease, no fit-out and no business rates on a shopfront. Your costs stay small while your standards stay high.
Coffee roasted by us
Small-batch, hand-roasted single origins from our Hampshire roastery. Not a white-label bean with your sticker on it.
Equipment from the source
We're the southern UK distributor for Slayer Espresso. Your machine and your coffee come from one place, with one number to call.
Trained properly
You don't need to arrive as a great barista. We'll train you on the coffee, the kit and running the day.
Move to the trade
A coffee tuk tuk follows the footfall: markets, events, office parks and seasonal pitches, in a way a fixed café never can.
Backed by a real roastery
We run our own café, tuk tuk, coffee subscriptions and wholesale accounts across the south. You're joining a working coffee business.
The model
What makes a mobile coffee business work
The pitch
Location does more work than anything else. A pitch with steady footfall and the right permissions is what turns great coffee into a great day's trade.
The coffee
You serve the same coffee we serve in our own café. Consistent, seasonal, and roasted close enough to be genuinely fresh.
The kit
A Piaggio Ape in OHCO livery: birch ply interior, stainless bar, espresso machine and grinder, retail shelf and chalkboard menu.
The community
A regular pitch turns strangers into regulars fast. The best coffee trucks are part of someone's morning, not a novelty.
About OHCO
A Hampshire roastery, not just a coffee brand
We hand-roast in small batches in Hampshire. We buy direct where we can, we roast to order, and we sell to people who can taste the difference: through our own café, our tuk tuk, our Coffee Club subscribers and a growing list of wholesale accounts across the south.
Our origins include Colombia, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, Kenya, Brazil and Nicaragua, alongside our Casa OHCO house blend, built to work as espresso, filter or cafetière.
The tuk tuk trades alongside our café in Hursley. Same coffee, same standard, in a form that can go where the people are.
What you bring
This suits some people and not others
We'd rather say no to the wrong partner than sign the wrong one. Here's what tends to make the difference.
You care about coffee
You don't need to arrive as a great barista. We'll train you. But you do need to care whether the shot is good.
You're willing to graft
Early starts, weather, restocking, admin after close. The good ones do all that and still smile at the ninth customer of the morning.
A pitch, or the drive to find one
Public or private land, with permission from the council or landowner. Finding and securing it is down to you.
The alternatives
Compared with the other ways in
Versus opening a café
- No lease, no dilapidations, no fit-out overrun
- No business rates on a shopfront
- Far lower start-up costs than a fixed café
- You can change pitch if a location disappoints
Versus going it alone
- Coffee, roasting and equipment already solved
- Trained by the people who roast the beans
- Brand, packaging and marketing assets ready to go
- Someone to call when the grinder plays up at 6am
